At Bowen Secondary School, we believe that learning Mother Tongue Languages goes beyond the classroom. Through meaningful learning experiences, cultural exploration and authentic language use, we nurture confident communicators who appreciate their cultural heritage and connect with the wider community.

Our Mother Tongue Languages (MTL) Department aims to:

• Develop Confident Communicators — Equip students with the language proficiency and communication skills needed for everyday life and future opportunities.

• Deepen Cultural Appreciation — Foster an understanding of cultural traditions, history and values.

• Nurture Global Citizens — Empower students to embrace their Asian roots while engaging confidently with an increasingly interconnected world.

Celebrating Diversity, Embracing Traditions

Language and culture come alive through meaningful celebrations and hands-on experiences. Students have opportunities to explore cultural traditions, participate in festive activities and deepen their appreciation of Singapore's multicultural heritage.

Mother Tongue Fortnight Programme

Conversational Chinese and Malay Programme

The Conversational Chinese and Malay Programme gives students the opportunity to pick up a new language in a fun and supportive environment. With no exams and no pressure, students can build their confidence in speaking Chinese or Malay at their own pace.

The programme is on a voluntary sign-up basis, making it a great way to explore a new language out of genuine interest and curiosity.

Overseas Immersion & Cultural Exchange

Connecting Beyond Borders

Our cultural exchange programmes provide students with authentic opportunities to develop cross-cultural skills, communication competencies and global awareness.

Through school immersion, students broaden their perspectives, develop intercultural understanding and apply their language skills in authentic settings.

Our partnership with Yi Shiue Junior High School (义学国中) in Taiwan provides opportunities for students to forge friendships, experience different school cultures and develop greater confidence in communicating in their Mother Tongue Language.

Engaging Language Learning

We strive to make Mother Tongue Language learning engaging, relevant and meaningful. Through collaborative learning, technology-enabled activities and experiential opportunities, students develop confidence in using their languages to express ideas and communicate effectively.

We encourage students to express their perspectives, share their experiences and develop their talents through authentic language platforms.
